The National Institute for Environment and Development in Suriname (NIMOS) in collaboration with the Ministry of Natural Resources and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) are engaged in the multi-year project Improving Environmental Management in the Mining Sector of Suriname, with Emphasis on Artisanal and Small Scale Gold Mining (EMSAGS).
The EMSAGS project aims to improve environmental management in the mining sector of Suriname, with the emphasis on artisanal and small-scale gold mining as the biggest cause of deforestation in Suriname. The project is funded by, among others, the GEF through the UNDP and implementation is jointly in the hands of the Ministry of Natural Resources and NIMOS.
The EMSAGS project invites applications for the following consultancy:

Environmental management and protection is a primary task of the government. Article 6g of the Constitution provides that the State will create and promote conditions which are necessary for the protection of nature and the preservation of the ecological balance.
The aim of this project is to formulate a national action plan to enable the government to determine national requirements, needs, goals and schemes to limit the use of mercury (Hg) in the small-scale gold mining sector (ASGM) and processing or stop.
