MIA Project

The Minamata Initial Assessment project (MIA project) started in January 2017 and had an initial duration of 12 months. The project has been extended once and was financially completed in January 2019.

The aim of this project is: “to undertake a study of mercury prevention in Suriname to enable the government to determine the national requirements and needs for the ratification of the Minamata Convention and to come to a sound basis for the implementation of The treaty.”

NIMOS is responsible for technical coordination.

The project has the following components:

  • Evaluation of legislation and policies related to the implementation of Articles 3, 5, 7, 8 and 9 of the Convention.
  • An initial assessment of mercury occurrences in the following categories: stocks of mercury and mercury compounds; import and export procedures including an assessment of storage conditions;
  • supply of mercury, including sources, recycling activities and quantities; sectors that use mercury and the amount per year, including manufacturing processes; ASGM and products containing mercury; trade in mercury and mercury compounds;
  • Identifying mercury emission sources, mercury discharge sources to land and water.
  • Identify key stakeholders involved in the project, who also directly or indirectly play an important role in managing the obligations of the treaty

Define coordination and decision-making systems that are needed to determine national priorities for mercury in national plans and policies.
